Journal Entry, Day 5
Grand Hotels and Mountain Heights
Our morning at The Essex Resort & Spa began with an early breakfast at Junction, fueling up for a day filled with breathtaking scenery and historic landmarks. After checking out, we departed Vermont and set our sights on the majestic White Mountains of New Hampshire, heading toward the renowned Omni Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods.
Upon arrival at the Omni Mount Washington, we were immediately captivated by its grandeur. Nestled at the base of the Presidential Range, this historic hotel, built in 1902, has hosted presidents, poets, and celebrities alike. We took a self-guided tour, wandering through the opulent halls and elegant sitting rooms, admiring the timeless architecture and rich history. The grand verandas offered sweeping views of the mountains, making it easy to see why this hotel remains an iconic retreat.
Lunch was a highlight of the visit—an elegant Grand Buffet in the Main Dining Room, where f loor-to-ceiling windows framed stunning views of the White Mountains. With a delicious spread of local and seasonal dishes, we savored our meals while soaking in the timeless atmosphere of this historic gem.
After lunch, we departed for one of the most thrilling experiences of the trip: a ride on the Mount Washington Cog Railway. Arriving at Base Station, we checked in and prepared for our ascent to the summit of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast.
The Cog Railway, a marvel of 19th-century engineering, provided a unique and unforgettable journey. As the steam-powered locomotive climbed the steep slopes, we passed through alpine forests, rocky ridges, and above the treeline, where the landscape turned into a windswept tundra. The 45-minute ascent culminated in breathtaking views at the summit, where we had time to explore the Sherman Adams Visitor Center, browse the gift shop, and take in the awe-inspiring panorama of the surrounding peaks.
The descent offered another chance to marvel at the engineering behind the world’s first mountain-climbing railway. By the time we returned to Base Station, the evening light cast a golden glow over the rugged landscape.
From there, we continued our journey to Jackson, NH, where a warm and welcoming dinner awaited us at the Red Fox Bar & Grille. A cozy mountain lodge atmosphere set the scene for a delicious meal, with options ranging from braised Angus beef pot roast to baked haddock and handmade burrata cheese ravioli. Dessert was a classic apple crisp with vanilla ice cream, the perfect end to a day filled with adventure.
With full hearts and satisfied appetites, we made our way to North Conway, checking in at our hotel for a well-earned night of rest. Nestled in the heart of the White Mountains, the hotel provided the perfect retreat as we prepared for another day of discovery ahead.
