Taste of New England
Journal Entry, Day 3
Exploring the Berkshires
Our morning began with a relaxed self-serve breakfast at our hotel. With bags ready for handling, we set off on another day of exploring New England’s rich history and breathtaking scenery.
Our first stop was a tour of the grand “Cottages” of the Berkshires—lavish mansions from the Gilded Age that once housed America’s wealthiest families. These sprawling estates, with their intricate architecture and sprawling grounds, stood in stark contrast to their humble name. Against the vibrant autumn leaves, they painted a picture of old-world luxury and refinement.
Crossing into Vermont, we passed through Bennington, a town rich in Revolutionary War history, before arriving in Manchester. This picturesque town, nestled in the Green Mountains, was the perfect place to explore and enjoy lunch on our own. Many of us strolled along its charming streets, browsing local shops and savoring Vermont’s famous farm-to-table flavors.
Refueled and ready for more, we arrived at Hildene – The Lincoln Family Home. Built in 1905 by Robert Todd Lincoln, the only surviving son of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, this Georgian Revival mansion provided a fascinating glimpse into the Lincoln legacy. As we toured its beautifully preserved interiors, we were transported back in time, imagining the Lincoln family’s life within these walls. The estate’s gardens were equally breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the Vermont mountains. The crisp autumn air and golden foliage made our visit even more magical. Walking through the peaceful grounds, we reflected on the history we had encountered throughout the day.
As the afternoon waned, we departed Hildene and settled in for a scenic drive to Essex Junction, where we would stay for the next two nights. Rolling hills, forests, and open fields stretched before us, glowing in the warm hues of fall. A few comfort stops along the way allowed us to stretch our legs and take in the scenery before arriving at The Essex Resort & Spa. Check-in was smooth, and the resort’s inviting atmosphere immediately put us at ease.
After freshening up, we gathered in the Salon Room of the Mansion Building for a delicious buffet dinner. As we dined, we exchanged stories from the day, our conversations filled with excitement for the days ahead. Another unforgettable chapter of our New England autumn leaves tour had come to a close, and we couldn’t wait to see what tomorrow had in store.
